"The Tattooed Pastor" Strikes Again

Monday, April 9, 2007

Rob Faulkner, a reporter for The Hamilton Spectator, did a short write-up on me in the paper today [read the article here], not willing to be out-done by The Toronto Star, I suppose [blog post here | article here].

I really love that Rob featured our new [CML] initiative in the short article. The piece is more about what we're doing at The Freeway, than who I am. His wife has apparently been to the coffee house and absolutely loves it, so he thought he should feature what we're doing in his column a little bit.

In the process of being interviewed by reporters as of late, I am learning how important it is to choose my words very carefully. I have a new respect for people who are constantly in the limelight, being interviewed. It is so easy for what you say to be misconstrued sometimes. Even what is chosen to be printed among all that you say, is quite interesting. It seems that reporters often have in mind what story they are looking for, and they shape the content to make you fit. And sometimes they don't even tell the truth... imagine that. This will all be a good learning process for me, I am sure. Part of me wants to never speak to the media again, but I know that our story at The Freeway is an important one that we need to tell, so I will simply need to learn this new skill.

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Thanks for the link! As for your concern about being careful with your words in media interviews, I can identify. Since starting our ministry in Winnipeg, I have been interviewed for TV news several times. Once, the CBC actually used my answer for one question, but edited as though I was answering an entirely different question. I had to learn to answer with the question in the answer. I have several stories like that. Alas!

    Peace,
    Jamie

Hey Jamie - I guess I am not alone. That's good.

You would think that because of the trouble you have gotten yourself into - you would know when to stop. You are an embarrassment to your family, the Salvation Army and many others. It is time to stop the filth.

Anonymous - Do I know you? If so, have the decency to send me an e-mail or at least leave your name on a comment like that.

What trouble have I gotten myself into? And what part of my family or The Salvation Army are you speaking for? Not any of the parts I have talked to about this.

You are right though, I am an embarrassment much of the time. Thanks for the update.

A couple of interesting books to read about the press and spin are All to Human by George Stephanoupolos and a book by Carville and Begala called Buck Up, Suck Up, and Come Back When You Fowl Up.

Also, not to nitpick but you have a graphic of a Hummer on your weblog and they don't have a Hemi either.

Nice response to anonymous Pernell. I say far too many stupid things I would get myself in trouble with the media constantly if I had to do that. Good job, liked the Spec article..came across well I thought.

As a member of your family I can verify that your anonymous commenter is wrong. You are not an embarrassment (at least not for your tats :) As far as trouble, you were getting both of us in trouble long before getting inked.

    Jaci - Thank you.

Perron - You admit to being related to me? That's a good start.

I'm sure Jesus had the same things said about Him. You're in good company, friend.

I really do hate blog "drive-bys".

Anonymous, at least have the courage to comment under your real name - or not bother to comment at all.

Pernell, you are a great encouragement to many of us engaged in the missional conversation. Blog on, brother.

Wow... Pernell - as a follower of Christ, a friend and a fellow tattoo lover I want to say I'm proud to have you in my "family". Jesus taught us to love everyone, EVERYONE! The Salvation Army has been proud to support at viable ministry such as the Freeway and encourage you to continue showing what love can really be. Thanks for accepting me and all my flaws!

This message is more for our dear friend Anonymous: I myself have a lot of tattoo's...A heck of a lot more than most. With respect to this I get alot of weird looks especially in religious venues. It has made me feel very uncomfortable over the years and has actually made me stray from the church. The reason i say this is because, as a christian person you should be accepting people for who they are and not what they look like. So the whole comment from anonymous illustrates my point perfectly. If you want something to flurish like religion you're going to have to start accepting a wider audience. Plain and simple, not everyone is going to be the way you want. You need to ask yourself whether or not would like to have a full church with all kinds of people, or a half full church with only people you think should be there. The reason i even posted on this blog is because if it wasn't for people like Pernell, There would be a bigger problem that the church would not be equipped to deal with. He's actually the first person that i've spoken with regarding religion in a very long time. Having someone that different types of people can relate to should be a blessing and comments like that should never come up. My name is Michael Hutchinson.. Have a good day..
I'm not sucking up Pernell you know full well that i wouldn't hahaha.. take care man and don't listen to these people. You're doing good..
