Where Is God?

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

"God, my friends, is with the poor and God is with us if we are with them."
"The poor is where God lives."
--- Bono, NAACP acceptance speech

"You will always have the poor with you."
"Whenever you give a drink to someone who is thirsty, I am there."
"The Kingdom of God exists in the poor."
--- Jesus, [paraphrased by me]

These ideas have been grabbing a hold of me as of late. There will always be poor with us. God is in the poor. God is always with us.

Hmmm...

I've heard a number of people say this and intellectually I think I get it. Having read some of Jesus' teaching, this makes sense. The tough part is when I go out looking for the ideological concept of "the poor", and when I get there I find an angry person, a sad person, a dirty person, someone other than an easy ideal. Now all of a sudden, I need to allow Jesus to act in and through me before I am able to see past the surface of that person and find Him there.
