Remembrance Day Poem By Samantha Goodyear

Friday, November 10, 2006

Yesterday our eight year old daughter, Samantha, wrote a poem about Remembrance Day. No one asked her to write it - it wasn't for an assignment at school or anything - she said she "just felt compelled to write it."

This morning her teacher liked it so much when she read it to her, that she asked Sam to recite it to the whole school [500 students] at an assembly this afternoon.

Here is the poem:

Remembrance Day

Once a war happened
A very sad one indeed
Lots of people were killed
Just to do us a noble deed
We'll always remember the freedom they gave us
And we'll never forget the sacrifices that they made

Yeah, she's brilliant.

I guess the pacifist part of me struggles with how to honour those who have a different perspective and have given their lives. Sam seems to have found the words. Good job, Sam. Thanks. stevec
