Poverty Is Hard To See

Sunday, October 8, 2006

This Derek Webb song has been kicking my butt as of late. Especially this weekend as my belly hurts from too much delicious food, and I am feeling deeply connected to people who love me, and I feel the warmth of the home in which I live.

Poverty is so hard to see
When it’s only on your TV
And twenty miles across town
Where we'’re all living so good
That we moved out of Jesus'’ neighbourhood
Where he'’s hungry and not feeling so good
From going through our trash
He says, "more than just your cash and coin
I want your time
I want your voice
I want the things you just can'’t give me"

So what must we do?
Here in the west we want to follow you
We speak the language and we keep all the rules
Even a few we made up
"Come on and follow me
But sell your house
Sell your SUV
Sell your stocks
Sell your security
And give it to the poor"

What is this?
Hey what'’s the deal?
I don'’t sleep around and I don'’t steal
I want the things you just can'’t give me

"Because what you do to the least of these
My brother’s, you have done it to me
Because I want the things you just can'’t give me"

Go here to download the whole album for free. And when you hear this song, please pray for our little church community, The Freeway, as we try desperately to take seriously the words that Jesus said here in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Canada. Thank you.

Peace.... and Happy Thanksgiving, Canada.

Best wishes as you embark on that journey. It's one you'll never forget or regret.

Each week, our little downtown street-front church, feeds around 125 people a free noontime meal on Tuesdays (along with free groceries if they need them); and on Fridays we have an afternoon free "movie day" for our "neighborhood friends" complete with free popcorn, candy, soft drinks, etc. (and more groceries)

On a weekly basis, we'll give away 4000 pounds of free groceries, no strings attached. And we could easily give away 7000 pounds if we had the storage space.

And it's the very best thing--without question--that I've ever done with my life as a Jesus-follower.

One day before closing, one of our friends said: Hey, pastor. If Jesus were still around, I bet he'd hang out at a place like that.

Big tears welled up in my eyes because that's exactly what we're shooting for. :-)

    Warmest regards,
